Are you passionate about reading?

I just got inspired from Mrs. Ripp's blog!  She blogged about witnessing a student from her school who asked his dad to buy him a book because his teacher said it was one of his favorites.  It is inspiring to reflect on my reading practices in the classroom, as well as home.  I want to be that teacher who is inspiring students to ask for books (instead of video games or toys!) based on my opinion!  During the reading block, I am assigned books that are mandatory to read.  They are great books, don't get me wrong.  I just didn't choose them.  As teachers, it is important not to lose your identity, while maintaing the integrity of the curriculum.  How are you being "passionate" about reading?

  1. I share books from my childhood "library" with my kindergartners. Of course, some of the books are drawn in by yours truly. The kids get a kick out of this because I make a big deal about how they treat our classroom books and they can't believe that I would have written in any of my books!

    1. That is a great idea Mari Beth! I love reading new books or books recommended by others. So I started a "lending library" for my present students. They chose books that they enjoyed during class time and/or have been recommended by a peer or myself. In the past, I have lost many books because they were not returned. : ( However, my current students are excited to borrow my books and have been bringing them back! : )

  2. I read the books that my district (our district) requires but then I always read books that I love and want to read as well. My students also love to bring in their own books to share and we read them during our morning meeting. I love picture books so I do anything I can to read the books that I love!

    1. It's good to hear how you (another teacher from our district) make sure to include the books you and your class enjoy to read. It's important to read the required texts, but it can be difficult to find time in my class's schedule to read books my students bring in or books I want to share. I will make a bigger effort to read their books (morning meeting is a great time to do that)! Thank you for sharing!
