New Literacies

"As technology integration continues to increase in our society, it is paramount that teachers possess the skills and behaviors of digital age professionals. Moving forward, teachers must become comfortable being co-learners with their students and colleagues around the world."
ISTE: International Society for Technology in Educationhttp://www.iste.org/standards/nets-for-teachers

The new literacies are new forms of literacy based on the development of technology.  It is extremely important for teachers to learn and be up-to-date with the new literacies and new developments in technology.  Teachers will be able to use technology to excite and motivate students to learn.

The International Society for Technology in Education provides resources on their website.  http://www.iste.org/standards/nets-for-teachers  They have a page with links just for teachers.  They provide resources, such as books, PDs, webinars, and so much more.  http://www.iste.org/learn

One example of a new literacy I want to utilize in my classroom is the blog.  I want my students to start blogging about what they are learning about.  We can share this information with our families and community.

  1. I think having your students blog about what they are learning about in class would be a great idea! Let me know when you get it started.

  2. Hi Kelly! I am excited to create a blog with my class. I'm not sure if I would have them blog individually being that they are first graders. I think writing a blog would be a great writing process for my students.

  3. I would like my students to use a blog as well. I think that it will take a lot of modeling for them at first but once they are independent at blogging, it will be a great teaching tool! I would like my students to blog about what they are learning about in say science and then their classmates can comment. So excited to try this new technology!

  4. Hi Lauren! I agree! I will need to model how to blog until my first graders understand how to do it. But for now, I am going to collaborate with my students and we will write and create blog entries for a class blog until I feel they are independent enough for their own blogs.
